Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit Of...?
Friday, August 04, 2006

It's been a hot and steamy week in the city. And not in the fun way! A good one to stay inside. And that's just what I think a lot of people did. But not me.

I went down to the pier with a friend to watch a movie. They have those outdoor River Flicks in the summer. The pier was cool. A breeze. A good spot. So good you didn't mind watching a bad movie. Like really bad. Did you ever see Cruel Intentions? If your answer is no, I suggest you keep it that way.

But it was SO bad it was good. I think they picked that movie so people would laugh and yell cruel things back to the screen. But it was just too hot to do that. And since there was a breeze, it was tolerable to be out. Just sitting there like a blob was okay.

So we didn't want to leave. But when the pier was practically empty, we had too. We walked East on 14th Street. And waiting to cross the street at 10th Avenue we saw this hole in the wall called Liberty Inn.

"Who do you think would really stay there?" asked Nigel. He comes from London and has that accent so everything he says sounds better.

"I don't know," I said. "Let's find out."

We couldn't get in because some guy who seemed like he was just let out of jail was blocking the entrance, telling us all they had left was Two Hours and Three Hours and he and his friend - she looked like she came from the cell next door - wanted to sleep for the whole night. So they left and we stayed.

Found out the Liberty Inn rents for two and three hour increments. They charge $62 an hour, or something like that. A whole night is about $199. Unless you want to upgrade to the luxury romantic suite. Guy behind the desk gave us a card. It read:

Your Rendezvous For Romance
Nigel and I cracked up. Yeah... that's just where I'd want to go for a romantic interlude. But we told the desk guy a friend from London was getting married and coming to New York for her honeymoon. Could we see that special suite?
Well. It was very special. Oh my! Romantic suite??? It was a room. It was larger than a bread box. It was clean. And it had a jacuzzi tub. But the highlight was the mirror on the ceiling. Thinking back to some of my frogs, those reflections were anything but sexy.
We left the room and told the guy we'd get back to him, giggling, and leaving the Liberty Inn. When we hit the street, we saw a light shining from the building so we turned to look up. The mirror reflected off the window and we saw them. One woman's leg stretched out over a big, dark, hairy one; his big belly protruding into hers. They were "resting." Their two hours... or hopefully three, were up.
"Who comes here?" asked Nigel.
Obviously... many!
